A SYDNEY VISITOR ON AUCKLAND, [from our own correspondent.] Sidney', February 15. A description , of a. trip to New Zealand by a recent visitor is printed in. the Sydney Sun. Of Auckland it is said:— is a lovely city—just second to Sydney. Queen Street is crowded between nine and six o'clock, and to cross from one side to the other, as in George Street, Sydney, you have to wait for a favourable opportunity. At the street corners you see the usual dawdlers, hangers-on, and the gossipers, and the policemen have no instructions, to carry out the "move-on" clause in force as in Sydney. Maoris on the footpath are as plentiful as blackberry bushes in New Zealand latter . a pest—and their yabber quickly arrests attention and excites interest." One thing noted was that nearly evcrv other Maori woman has a baby on her back, a dirt;? little kiddie, held on by a shawl tied round the shoulders. Tho tramways are privately owned and as oars seem to be crowded all day long they must bo returning a handsome profit to tho company. Ail a rule it; is a two-car system— sometimes a double-decker in the evening— comprising a combined smoking and ladies' compartment, and these carry a limited number of 52 seated and 14 standing, and no one is allowed on tho platforms. Auckland is without any doubt the finest and most picturesque city in New Zealand, and the views of land and water from the top of Mount Eden or One-tree Hill are unsurpassed in the Southern Hemisphere. In the suburbs of Newmarket, Remuera, Epsom, and other towns near to Auckland there aro everywhere signs of prosperity, new streets being formed and houses in course of erection in: ©very direction."
