AN UP-TO-DATE LINER.

The new steamer Makarini, one of the. latest additions to the well-known, Tyser Line, arrived at Auckland at three o'clock this morning from London, via Capetown and Australian ports. The vessel visited Australia last year, but this is her first visit to New Zealand waters. <

Tho Makarini was launched from the yards of Messrs. Workman, Clark, and Co., Ltd., at Belfast, early last year. She underwent her machinery trials and speed tests in April. These proved highly successful, and she left the Lough for London to load cargo for the initial voyage to Australia. She was built and engined by Messrs. Workman, Clark, and Co., Ltd., Belfast, and is of the shelter-deck type, 486 ft in length, with a gross tonnage of over 10,600, and has been constructed under special survey for the highest class in Lloyd's Register. She has been specially designed and prepared for the frozen meat service, three of tho. five holds being insulated by refrigerating machinery. Each hold has a hatchway, with, steam winches, derricks, and gear for handling cargo, and a derrick is suspended from the foremast capable of lifting machinery, motorcars, etc. Accommodation for about 850 steerage passengers is provided in rooms on the upper 'tween _ decks. Tho propelling machinery consists of two sets of triple expansion engines, supplied with steam from four single-ended steel boilers, working under forced draught. " Makarini" is the Maori equivalent for McLean, and it is said that the vessel was so called as a compliment to Mr. Douglas McLean, of Hawke's Bay. . - Besides tho Makarini, the Tyser Line have .another, vessel now on the stocks of the same size as the new vessel. < This steamer will also be engaged in the New Zealand-London trade

Tho Makarini will berth at the Railway Wharf this morning-, and after discharging 2300 tons of general cargo will visit Napier and Wellington.
