STUD NOTES.

[bt phaeton.]

Pcronilla, who has the record of winning the. C.J.C. Welcome Stakes and Feildinc; Stakes, was bred at tho Waikanao Stud by Mr. Lan Duncan, and stands out as a bargain of the sale ting, as she was secured when a yearling for tho small outlay of lOOgns. Poronilla. it is interesting to note, claims the strains of Musket. The leading lines in the pedigree of this smart filly read as follows:

Sire: Achilles, by Medallion (son of Nordcnfeldti from Nereid, by Goldabrougti (son of Fireworks) from Sea Swallow, by See Saw (son of Buccaneer). Dam: Prelude, by Merrie England (son of St. George) from Prologue, Catesby son of Musket) from Rosalind, by Albany (son of Thormanby).

The New Zealand Cup winner, Lady Lucy, (Seaton Delaval—Hilda) has been mated with the Soult— Fisher horse Maniopoto, and tho result of tho union will be looked forward to with interest.

Messrs. Douglas Brothers, of Hawko'e Bay. have had tho St. Leger— maro Maudo mated with Achilles this season. Maudo is tho clam of that good horse Mahutonga, so that much interest attaches to her stud record.

Tho Australian-bred Great Scot has been successfully represented outside England, but it was not until last month that he claimed an English winner. This was At Last, who won the Surrey Plate, at Gatwicke, for her breeder, Mr. Arthur James. Mr. James was one of tho few English breeders who sent mares to Great Scot, shortly after the Australian Cup winner took up his stud lifo there, and ho was rewarded with At Last, who promises to be more than useful, as sho won her race in good style.

Tho Hampton horso Ladas. who has never realised tho expectations formed of a Derby winner as a sire (remarks an English writer) is evidently near the end of his days. Although only 21 years old ho has been retired from active service. His temper has not improved with age, _ and he strongly resents the intrusion of visitors .in his paddock. His back has become very hollow, and, as an English writer remarked recently, " I suppose he has worn himself out with his restlessness and peevishness."

In England, from March 25 to September 18 of this year, Callinule mares were responsible for move winners than tho daughters of any other sire. Altogether the progeny of CJallinule's daughters included 28 winners of 34j races, but the prize-money only totalled £9527, as against > the £18,585 of Isinglass mares with 19 winners of 27 races. Persimmon mares were second en tho list with £17,613, and, like Isinglas3, were represented by 19 winners of 27 races. Then came Orme, £12,256: and Lc Sancy, £11,400. Of course, Trenton mares figure in the list, the total credited them being eight winners of lis races of tho value of £3*69, while Carbine mares have thrown eight winners of 12 races, totalling £1662. Ayrshire mares threw 22 winners of 37 races, and St. Simon mares 17 winners of 28 races.

"Vigilant," of tho London Sportsman, says:"lt is indeed curious that while wo have scarcely any Herod horses of much note in training our neighbours across the Channel have plenty, and to sparo, and it is to 1)© hoped that our breeders will do what they can to atone for their neglect in recent years of Herod blood. Tho moro wo go on breeding in and in to Eclipse the more vitally necessary it will 'become to provide our inbred Eclipse stallions with mares containing strong infusions close up of Herod, and also of Matohem blood, but as the Matchcm line is going strongly it is now needful only to see that our supply of Herod blood is augmented, in order that our breed of thoroughbreds may not deteriorate. That it has of lato years already done so is the opinion of not a few unbiassed judges, and unless we cherish the blood of the third of the three great stallions to whom we are indebted for the supremacy of our blood stock, degeneration will surely follow."

Cloud died last week after producing a dead foal to the American-bred horse Salvadan. She was tho dam of Cloudy Dawn. Lady Patricia, and otke»»..
