REMUERA AND GREATER AUCKLAND.
Sir,— your issue of December 4 tho Mayor of Auckland, referring to the action, of the Remuera Road Board, states: " MV..Rutherford's figures about the cost ,of ad-'; ministration is startling. He says that; tho average cost in tho city is : 30 per. cent., while- the Remuera Road Board's is : 15 per cent." In reply to a statement made 'by a. member of the Board that there would bo a reduction in the cost of administration if Remuera joined Greater Auckland, I said that at the Local Bodies' Conference, recently held at Wellington, the. Minister, stated that the cost of adminisrtation for, the Dominion was: Road boards, 15' per cent.; county councils, 39 per cent. ; f and,, boroughs. 30 per cent. This return was, in. favour of road boards. I did not make any statement in respect to the cost of the city, or Remuera Road Board's administration. I considered it was not necessary for Remuera to incur the expense of taking ,a poll of ratepayers until Parnell and Newmarket had decided to join Greater Auck. land, particularly Parnell, and that Remuera should first know under what conditions they woro asked to join. - J. G. RUTHEBK>BD.:
