SHELLY BEACH BATHS.
Sir,—l went yesterday to see the now baths at Shelly Beach, but was astounded to find that no spittoon has been provided. In all good English swimming baths there is a spittoon running round the bath, just above the handrail, and running water keeps it constantly flushed. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of .teaching swimming recognises the importance of this,, as beginners invariably take unexpected mouthluls, and with no spittoon these return to the birth '•; with additions. It is this absence of spittoon that makes the Albert-street baths eo ■ poorly patronised 'by those who are cleanly, tho scam on tho surface there being often disgusting. It is not 100 late to remedy this ; defect, and I trust some councillor will'.make it his business to see that this is done. H. A. E. Milk its, Training College. November 29, 1912.
Sir,—-Inside the door of the Shelly Beach baths is a brass plate, upon which appears tho following:—"These baths were opened for use on the 23rd November, 1912." One would presume that this statement was true. "But things are not what they seem," as was proved by eoveral enthusiastic swimmers, who, after coming from a distant suburb on the 28th, found that thero was even then no water in the baths. Perhaps this discovery will necessitate an alteration in the reading on the brass plate.— ~. Would-be Swimmer, November 29, 1912.
