THE BRITISH NAVAL SERVICE.
—At the banquet tendered to Admiral Sir Geo. King-Hall by the Auckland Total Abstinence Society on Monday evening last, ifc is reported that Mr. H. "E. Pacey, in proposing the toast of " Our Guest," remarked that " ' Jack' ashore to-day was a gentleman compared with 'Jack' a generation back." Now, fir, in making this statement Mr. Pacey oasts a reflection upon the service at a period when to my intimate knowledge there wore in proportion quite as many men possessing tho natural qualities of a gentleman as there are to-day. As one of the old type of navy men, who served for close upon 17 years, I feel, in justice to many of my old messmates, who to-day are occupying positions of trust on account of their fitness and good character, Mr. Pacey's remarks ■ should not go unchallenged. Thanking you, and trusting you will find space for this. Geobgis "Watson*. Aacklund, November 29.
