FUTURE OF WIRELESS.
CHEAPER THAN CABLEGRAMS. MULTIPLICATION OF STATIONS. [By TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Thursday. The Postmaster-General, discussing the future of wireless telegraphy, says it is proposed when the Imperial chain of wireless stations is completed that arrangements shall be made for the transmission of messages from Australasia to the United Kingdom for two shillings a word, against the three shillings a word, the cable charge. Ho has, however,' no official information. Tho matter will require somo discussion. It is impossible to predict what will be the ultimate development of wireless. Within the last two or three weeks he received a confidential communication, from which there is every reason to believe wireless telegrams over long distances up to 2000 miles or more will bo possible at a speed much greater than that of the submarine cables. A station similar to that at Awanui, is to bo erected near Bluff, and will be gone on with immediately the Awanui station is finished. With stations at Awanui, Suva, Rarotonga (which is dependent on French action at Tahiti), and Tahiti the Pacific will bo widely ranged.
The Minister is hopeful that a conference to be held next year of representatives of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand will lead to practical steps for the laying of . an Imperial cablo between Canada and Great Britain.
