HARP OF ERIN TRAMS.

• —«■ A MISSED OPPORTUNITY. Very strong feeling is being expressed by the residents of Greenlane' and Ellerslie regarding the stoppage' of the Harp of Erin tramway extension, and it is probable that a combined meeting of ratepayers will be' held shortly to discuss the question, A prominent Reniuora ratepayer, who is a member of the Ratepayers' Association, discussing the nutter with a Herald representative yesterday, said' that. it was time tho antiquated road board system, by which ridiculous situations such as this one were brought about, was relegated to the dark ages. In his opinion, tho Remuera Road Board had been, to .say the least, very unbusinesslike about the* whole thing. If ithad really had the residents' wishes at heart- and a genuine desire for the progress of its district, it would have taken up the matter as soon as it was mooted, and would have raised the loan necessary (£7000) to grade the Great South l\bad so that the extension could have been laid. Tho* interest on the loan would have been merely£3so a year, and the increase in the valuation of property and the rates from new buildings would have brought into the Board's treasury in all probability nearly £2000 a year. But its members had missed the opportunity, and now the residents had to pay the penalty. As a member of the Ratepayers' Association he could assure the Ellerslie- and Greenlano people that that body would take up the matter and he suggested that a combined meeting should be held tinder - the auspices of the association to go into the question.
