OLD MAN'S SUDDEN DEATH.
COLLAPSE IN DETECTIVE OFFICE. An old man, named A. "Pollard, a builder, of Epsom, about 72 years of age, collapsed in the detectives' office at the police station , yesterday, and died.before medical assistance could be secured. I Epsom carpenters recently complained of j the fact that many of their tools were disappearing, and an investigation located the lost article* in a second-band shop. Three of the complainant,?, among -whom was Pollard, were taken to the shop yesterday and identified .the articles. They were then taken to the police station, for the purpose of making statements, but on the way up Welles] ey-street Pollard complained of a pain in his chest. The others went on, telling the deceased to follow later. This he did, but had) scarcely seated himself in a chair in the detectives' office before ho collapsed. . Dr. Aubin was summoned immediately, but could only pronounce life to be extinct. Subsequently Dr. Cirdler, who had been attending Pollard, gave a certificate that the latter's death was due to heart failure, so that an inquest, will not be necessary.
