POLICE COURT NEWS.

At yesterday's sitting of the Police Court, before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., four first offenders were fined 5s each for drunkenness. Two other first offenders, who did not. appear, forfeited the amount of their bail. James Downey, who was charged with drunkenness and with a breach of his prohibition order, was fined £3. or 14 days' hard labour. George MeCauley pleaded guilty to stealing sacks valued at 4s. He was sentenced to seven days' hard labour, and was prohibited. Geoffrey (.'armichael pleaded guilty to converting to his own use tlie sum of £13 17s 6d, which had been entrusted to him. Accused was secretary of tho Auckland Benefit. Entertainers' Society. After' a concert, which had been held for the benefit of Mrs. Purcell, a widow, accused was entrusted with the proceeds amounting to £18 17s 6d, to give to to hor. Of this sum he failed to account, for £13 17s 6(1, and subsequently confessed to having used the money for hi« own purposes. Tho accused was fined £10, or three months' hard labour. Ho was further ordered to refund the amount stolen and to pay costs. A friend of the accused liecame guarantor for the whole amount (£24 9s Gd in all). Walter Palmers ton Johnstone was fined 10s for assaulting Frederick Benfield, the magistrate admitting that, there was great, provocation. Charged with vagrancy Lucy Mackio pleaded hard for another chance. Owing to her bad record she was sentenced to six months' hard labour. .Joseph Coburn and Robert Pullar, two hawkers, were charged with hawking without a license. They were fined £3 and £5 respectively, and each was ordered to pay 7s costs. To a charge of having assaulted a girl under 16 years of age, Donald Wilson, who was represented by Mr. Moody, pleaded not guilty and was committed "to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £100 each.

A charge of breaking and. entering a store at Kaiwaka was brought against Thomas Michael Redely and Charles Simon Clogoski. It appealed from the evidence that holes had Wen bored in tho back door of the store and an entrance gained. A very miscellaneous quantity of goods had been stolen, to the valtio of about £17 15s. The accused, v.ho were represented by Mr. A. E. Skelton, pleaded not guilty, reserving their defence. They were committed to the Supremo Court for trial, bail being allowed in one suretv of £100 each and two of £50.
