QUEEN-STREET TRAMWAY EXTENSION.

Sir,Tlie peoplo of Auckland were, no doubt, considerably surprised when reading the report of tho last meeting of the City Council to find that tho recommendation of tho Eloetrio and Water Committee, to the effect that the Queen-street tramway extension be proceeded with, was not adopted. According to the press report, Mr. Entrican strongly opposed tho extension on the ground that tho cost of acquiring a piece of land at the cornor of Queen-street and Karangahapo Road, which is alleged to be required, should lie borne by the ratepayers. This contention is clearly an endeavour to make flic question a personal one, which is strongly to bo deprecated, because the ratepayers of Auckland might, with greater reason, ask Mr. Entrican how much ho is being called upon to contribute towards the cost of paving Customs-street, a work which will greatly improve the approach to Mr. Entrican's place of business. Furthermore, it would appear as though Mr. Phitrican and Messrs. Knight and M.ennie, who are also reported to have spoken against tho adoption of the abovementioned committee's report were not present when a resolution was forwarded from 3000 patrons of the Town Hall asking the Council to urge on this matter. Surely such a strongly supported resolution never 'before received such scanty consideration at tho hands of some of our councillors. Town Hall.
