UNDER LEAGUE RULES.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. Mr. D. W. McLean, president of the Now Zealand Council, is in receipt of a ■letter from the secretary of > the Canterbury League, in. "whioh it is stated that prospects in the South are bright indeed. A sound executive has . been appointed, and converts to tho now code are being enrolled daily. Apparently the Canterbury \ officials are quite satisfied with the i: constitution _ of' tho council, as the letter contains nothing but praise for the gentlemen -who have done so much for the game in Auckland and tho Dominion. .\ , It is not expected that the New Zealand Council will allow the remarks made by Mr. Miller, one of tho managers of the New South Wales team, about the management of tho game in Auokland • to pass uni noticed. When tho council dealt with ' Deane for striking Curran in the Auckland game, a report of the proceedings was; not handed to tho press for publication, but after Mr. Miller saw fit to criticise the management many things havo been made public. The New South Wales Council did go back on the original agreement in connection with tho tour,, but out of consideration for the gams tho 'Now Zealand Council gave way. Then again when tho Deano case was being considered, Mr. Miller practically insulted tho members-of tho council, and Deane aggravated his offence by insulting: Mr. Campbell. The statement made by Mr. Millor that Deane's sentence was known before tho .inquiry endod is contrary to. fact. Not a single member of tho council left the room, wh-lo the inquiry was on, and a decision was not arrived at until after 11 p.m. Tho whole matter will bo reviewed by the New South Wales Council next week. '• .Dally" Messenger, whoso namo. has been familiar to overy person interested in League football in Sydney ior_ some years, has announced his intention of retiring dofinitely. Ho says ho will play football no more. Yet Messenger is only 29 years of age, and, unlike many men who havo been in tho front rank of tho game, and who havo played dashingly, sparing themselves never, and ready always to take risks, ho is physically fit, and is on© of the sturdiest men playing tho game in Australia- At tho commencement of last season Messenger, it was thought, would not again bo seen on the field. • It was known that he 'was about to bo married, and that ho was taking over an hotel. " Business first " was said to bo his motto, and since that timo " Dally " has not left Sydney. Ho declined tho trip with' tho Australasians to England, and more recently ho stood down when -players ' woro' being chosen for the tour of Now Zealand.
