IMPROVING DOMAIN ENTRANCE.
Tire Ground Decoration Committee of tho forthcoming Auckland Exhibition met. in the office of tlio secretary (Mr. W. I'. Holmes) yesterday afternoon. There were present:—Messrs. 11. C. Tewsley (chairman), E. A. Craig, W. E. Bush, E. T. Michaels, A. B. Roberton, J. C. Gleeson, E. C. Brown, and T. E. Pearson. Mr. Air. Bamford (of tho firm of Bamford and Pierce, architects to tho Exhibition), was also present. The secretary announced that tho Mayor of Pa rue 11 (Mr. R. S. Briggs) had informed him that the Borough Council intended to properly form and widen tho entrance from Maunsell Road- to tho Domain. General satisfaction -was expressed that tlio Parnell Council intended to take action, as the entrance was looked upon as a source of danger to traffic in its present state. . . s Tho idea of having a mazo at the Exhibition was generally approved. Tho plan drawn by Mr. J. J. Eraser, a replica of Hampton Court maze, was submitted to tho committee. According to tho plan tho mazo would cover a-quarter of an acre. The question of cost was discussed, and Messrs. Bush and Pearson agreed to draw up specifications and to give an indication of the cost of forming tho mazo with manuka. It was confidently expected that tho Government would allow the 'material to be carried free on the railways. On the motion, of Messrs. Craig and Gleeson, a hearty vote of thanks was tendered to Mr. Eraser.
Tho idea of having a Maori pa -was ako approved. Mr. G. A. Hansard sent a letter, stating that he could arrango for representatives of eight tribes to occupy the pa for fortnightly periods. Tho Maoris themselves would erect tho buildings and fencing required for tho pa. It was agreed to find tho ground for the pa, and the secretary was instructed to obtain from Mr. Hansard tho probable ccst of tho scheme and other details.
A plan for the decoration of tlio Exhibition grounds was submitted by Mr. Bamford. Tho full details of the plan were published in the Herald a few days ago. Tho plan, as submitted, appealed strongly to the committee, canbodying as it did a picturesque and comprehensive scheme. It was deemed advisable, however, that tho committee should visit the grounds before adopting it. In the meantime Sir. Bush agreed to have the locality of tho main buildings, tea kiosks. band stands, fountain, eto., mapped out with flags. .
A suggestion "by Mr. Pearson that the entrance from Maunsell Road, on each side of tho proposed tramways track, to tho Exhibition buildings, should bo planted with trees, is to be considered by the committee at- a future meeting. .
