THE CADET CHALLENGE.

CANADA V. AUCKLAND. THE SUGGESTION APPROVED.

Tub suggestion of Captain Davev, the commander of the Vancouver cadet 'contingent, now en route to Sydney, that the Auckland cadets should meet his bovs in open competition in November when they return to New Zealand, prior to their leaving for homo, has aroused considerable interest m cadet and territorial circles. UoJonel Logan the district commander, is strongly in favour of such a suggestion, but the competition must, so far as ho is concerned, bo purely voluntary and at the express wish of the officers and cadets concerned. Further, any preparation for the competition must not interfere with the prescribed training of the cadets. At the same time ho believes that the national pride and sportsmanlike instincts of the Auckland cadets will be thoroughly roused, and ho has no doubt that the bovs will >o quite willing to make any personal sacrihco for the honour of their respective companies, and the credit of New Zealand. As far as the beys aro concerned they are eager for their officers to parade them and ask their support and opinion, while the more far-seeing lads realise that such .1 competition would cause, a greater interest to be taken in their work, and perhaps eradicate the popular opinion that senior cadets are mainly larrikins. Colonel o. T. Major, of the King's Collego, will place the matter before his officers and cadets at the first opportunity, and Mr. J. W. Tibb's, of the" Gramma; ~ . . . , "• ot the Grammar School, intends to do the same. Mr. Tibbs believes that time and circumstances permitting, his boys will probably co-operate on (ho lines suggested. Ha believes that a competition in company drill, squad drill advance and rear-guard work, as well as shooting would bo quite within their sphere as suggested by Captain Davey, hut he does not think that "trooping the colours " would be suitable. However, these points would be fully entered into by his officers and cadets.

Captain Dawson, who commands the Collego Rifles, hopes that Majors Stuckeyand Gamble will take advantage of the opportunity to show the people of Auckland tho excellent material of their respective contingents.
