THE BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
FORMING AN AUCKLAND LEAGUE.
A meeting will be held on Tuesday evening next in the School Hall of the Pittstreet Church, for the purpose of forming a Bible in Schools League for the Auckland district. The three leading Protestant Churches —the Anglican, Presbyterian, and Methodist agreed upon a common platform in this matter. Legislation is to be sought for the introduction of the New South Wales system into tho schools of the Dominion. The system now in operation in New South Wales was introduced in 1867, and has worked so successfully that it lias been introduced also into Tasmania, West Australia, and Queensland, with good results.
The New South Wales system provides (1) That the school-teacher shall give Bible lessons from an approved text-book; (2) ministers of religion or 9heir accredited representatives have right of access to the schools to give special religious instruction to the children of their own Church in school hours and under school discipline; (3) a conscience clauseprovides that parents who object may withdraw their children from all religions instruction.
