TUNNELS FOR THE DRAINS.

WORK NEARING COMPLETION.

The most, difficult of the tunnelling work for the big Auckland and suburban drainage scheme has now been almost completed. The longest of all the tunnels:, extending from Wellington-street to Oliphant-street, a length of 3650 ft. is now almost completely driven, and the two drives from the opposite ends are expected to meet to-day or on Monday. Other tunnels will bo pierced in the course of the nest few weeks, practically completing the tunnel line as far as opening it up is concerned, to Wamoek'H, in Grey Lynn. In tunnelling under Albeit Park, * the contractors expected to meet with hard volcanic rode in pluce of the soft blue papa which has prevailed everywhere else; but it was not reached until the tunnel was close upon Cobstreet. The tunnel, which extends from the Stanley-street entrance of the Domain, is now being driven through this basaltic formation, in which holes for blasting have to be marie with drill and hammer.
