YOUNG NATIVE IN COURT.

CHARGE OF ASSAULT. [JBOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Cambridge, . Saturday. At the Magistrate's Court on Friday a young Maori named Hape was brought up on remand on a charge of assaulting another Maori at Maungatautari on November 9 last. He was brought to the Court by a number of natives, and was bound so securely with ropes that it took the police fully half an hour to extricate him. The police suggested that if, allowed to return to Maungatautari Hape would bo committing some serious crime, and urged that he be bound over ; ; the peace.' A conviction was then recorded, and accused bound over in two sureties of £50 each, and himself in £100. Tho sureties were not forthcoming, and he was removed in custody. He imagines all the Maungatautari land belongs to him.
