i THE DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS SNEDDEN GETS A CENTURY.

THERE is-goln* to bo a keen fight for the championship of the senior grade- in the Auckland Cricket Association's district competitions. The penultimate series of matches ended with the teams in wry in.creating positions. North Shore being only one point ahead of Grafton and Eden. Thia meant that if North Shore won their match against Ponsonby. who are bracketed with University at the bottom of the list, the Shore players would carry off the championship. When North Shore and Ponsonby nied in the first round the former won fairly easily, and it seemed as though they would repeat the performance with Ponsonby weakened by O. J. Thompson's return to England. Now. however, the. prospects have altered, and North Shore -will have to tight hard to tret the championship. The last series of matches started on Saturday, and the two teams in Question met at Victoria. Park. Batting first on a good wicket, Ponsonby started with N. C. Snedden and Woods at tho wickets. Woods went when the score was only six runs, and Collins, who succeeded him. did not last loug. and two wickets were then down for 27 runs. But the teteran. Robinson, then joined Snedden, and * partnership which, for a, long: time defied nil tho efforts of the North Shore attack teas set up. The score mounted steadily, intil Robinson was caught out by Sale, oft* prime, when he had scored 54. The partnership had put on 155 runs, and it was the turning point.jn the fortunes of the game. Snedden batted on until his score was 101, when he. too, was caught out by Sale, this lima off Bush's bowling. Snedden batted well, but not quite in his best form, for his innings was not rhanceless. However, it was a fine performance. It is the third lime this season that Snedden has scored ,i century for his club, and each innings has been made against a different team. Kavanagh batted briskly for 21 runs, Jacobsen (10) was the only other batsman to get into double figures, and the innings closed for 233 runs, just on the call of time. Nortu Shore, who had two juniors—Stewart and Coleman— their team, tried seven bowlers, Howden was ?h© best; he took four wicket* for 56 runs. Bush-five wickets for also bowled well. On a good batsman's wicket Eden failed to make a successful stand against the Parnell bowlers, and the score-sheet only showed 124 runs up when the final wicket fell. The team started exceedingly well, hut the first three men's efforts received little support from tho others. BrookeSmith compiled a smart 52. when he was caught behind tho stumps. L. Taylor secured a. creditable 44 by means of very forceful batting, and then fell a victim to Kerr, who got the fine average of seven wickets for 37 runs. The other three wickets fell to Olliff at a cost of 61 runs. Cummings had jnst passed into double figures when his wicket went down, and Hay notched 24 by good play. Parnell put 100 inns on the board for the loss of four wickets before time was called. Wright's total •vas 35. a well-hit score. Three wickets went down with very little addition, until Ellis and Olliff became -associated, and scored -:i (not out) and 13 (not out) respectively. The University team was another that did not make a good showing in the first innings. The majority of the eleven ton ad that the Grafton attack had a sting in it. and cautious play was adopted, bnt the total score was just 139. Ellis, first man in, made 31 by good play, and seemed to have settled down to business when Mason effected a smart catch off .Tones's bowling. The highest scorer was • 'aradus. who, going in after the fall ■if the second wicket, played right through for 35 (not out). The next best scorers were: Wallace (17), Jacobsen 'ID. and Graham (11). Mason, for Grafton, secured six wickets at it cost of just over five runs apiece, bowling with excellent judgment. Pratt took three wickets for 46 runs. Grafton put on 100 runs before time, losing only two wickets. Itorspool made 20. and was then clean i owled by Walker. Fryer made a lively display, and is still in, with 60 runs to hi» credit.

A century was also made in the second grade. C. Moller (Waitemata) scoriae 106 against Ponsonby. Riddell. another Watte* mat% batsman, scored 59. and Gilmour (University) made 60 aeainst Eden B. In the third grade Jones (University) scored 56, and Colder (Waitemata) 50. The best bowling performances in the lower grades were made by the following:—Second erode: Tfaresnape (Grafton), five wickets for 17 runs; Bennett (Parnclt). four for 19. Third grade: ifcGrath (Eden A), three for 3.
