COST OF PUBLIC WORKS.
CHEAPNESS OF DAY LABOUR. [BI TELEGRAPH. ASSOCIATION. ] _ Wellington, Monday. In commenting upon the success attendant on the construction of the new offices for the Upper Hutt Town Board to-day, the Minister for Public Works (Hon. R. McKenzie) said that if strong argument were wanted in favour of the Government system of carrying oat public works by day labour he could not do better than quote th« Hutt experience. The building was finished for £100 less than the lowest tender. In a recent tunelling undertaking the lowest tender for the job was £34,000, and the Government engineer's estimate was £22,000. The Government decided on day labour, and now that the job was nearly finished he anticipated that the cost would be £2000 or £3000 less than the engineer's estimate.
