In•■ the House of Assembly Mr. Eclden (Minister for Mines) said that he was prepared to accept an amendment to the State Coal' Miners' Bill restricting the sale to State . services. The reason for the Government starting the mine was the exorbitant prices charged by private owners. Mr. Edden quoted the success of the State mines in other countries, including New Zealand. The "estimated cost of sinking was £98,200, and the estimated profit £23,500 a year. Ha felt sure that if the British Government owned a fewmines the present trouble would have ended in an hour. The debate was adjourned.
