SUCCESSFUL CONCILIATION.
FELLMONGERS' DISPUTE.
FULL' SETTLEMENT ARRIVED AT.
That the Conciliation Council still provides effective machinery for the settlement of disputes between employers and employees was ;. effectively . demonstrated yesterday, when the dispute between the Auckland Fellmongers, Tanners, Soap Workers, and General Tanners' Employees' Union and the employers was heard before the Conciliation Commissioner. (Mr. T. Hark Giles).- A full settlement, satisfactory to both sides, was arrived at during the day, the .employees being granted a substantial increase in wages. The fact that the dispute was settled in one day constitutes a record for the Conciliation Council. The assessors for the employers were Messrs. R. T. Warnock, T. Simson,, and J. E. Astley, and for the union Messrs. H. Harlick* W. - McKnight, and J. Hutchinson. Mr. C. Grosvenor appeared for the employers and Mr. A. Rosser for the union. The clauses relating to hours of work, overtime, holidays, . general conditions, under-rate workers, and preference were agreed upon as.per the old award. The wages decided upon were as follows: Fellmongery, wool (greasy) classers, and pullers, Is, 3d per hour, an increase of 3d per hour in the caso'of pullers; pelt curers, skin classers, pelt fleshers, scudders, and painters, increase from Is to Is Id per hour; head tanner, from Is lid to Is 2d; roller men, from Is to ls~l|d; .lime drawers and tannery hands, from to Is Oj|d; sole leather shed hands and curriers' labourers, ' from to Is chrome workers, grainers, and machine shavers, from Is o£d to Is 2d; basil dressers, from 10|d to Is Okl; soap, starch, candle, and oil workers,'from lid to Is; gcnoral labourers, from ICUd to Is. The wages of youths was fixed as follows —Youths from 15 to 16 years, 12s 6d per week, same as old award; 16 to 17, increase from 15s to 16s 6d; .17 to 18, from 17s 6d to 20s; 18 to. 19, from 5d to6d per hour; 19 to 20, .from. 6£d to 7£d; 20 to 21, from 7Ad to 9d. scope of the award has been increaJ id from a radius of 10 miles to include the whole of the northern industrial district. The term of the award is to bo for three years. By consent of the employers tho increase of wages is to commence as from to-day.
