A BRITISH PACIFIC BASE.
WASHINGTON AND FANNING ISLANDS. DOCKS AT JAMAICA LIKELY. By Telegraph.— Association.— (Received February 27, 10.15 p.m.) London, February 27. The newspapers revive a statement that, with a view to the opening of the Panama Canal in 1913, Britain is fortifying Fanning Island (the cable station in the Pacific), and is considering the establishment of a naval base on Washington Island, near Fanning Island. It is further stated that Britain is inquiring with regard to probable dock construction at Jamaica, in the West Indies.
