Witters moved thai; in view of the great expense entailed in sending the dredge Maui to Auckland for docking purposes, the Board take the advice of some eminent engineer on the ad visibility of having a (lock in Gisborne. Speaking to his motion, Mr. Witters claimed that close upon £2000 was spent in sending the Maui to Auckland on her recent visit, while ' £1035 of this sum would not have been required if the vessel could have been docked hero. The last sum he mentioned would provide interest on a loan of £23,287 10s, at 4£ per cent., and he thought it would be worth while to obtain a report on the subject. Having referred to the great risk run by the Board in sending the Maui away to Auckland, a vessel worth £35,000, and only insured for about £20,000, Mr. Witters drew attention to the fact that a dock might be revenue producing. The motion was adopted.
