TRAMCARS IN COLLISION.

HOBSON-STREET INCIDENT. Some excitement was caused in Hobsonstreet shortly before five o'clock yesterday afternoon by a collision between two tramcars. Fortunately none of the passengers were seriously injured, although they were thrown out of their seats by the force of the impacts. It appears that Car 88 was on its way from Ponsonby to town, and stopped as it rounded the curve at Wellington-street for the purpose of letting down passengers. Behind it came Car 65, and whether it was that the brakes refused to act or that the motorman did not sec the car in front is not at present known. Anyhow No. 65 bumped into Car 88, and the latter was driven forward a couple of chains, and No. 65 bumped into the front car again with a resounding crash. This time the back car became telescoped into the forward one, and another car had to be brought along to drag No. 65 apart from No. 88. Car No. 65 was badly damaged by the force of the collision, the whole of the front of the car being smashed in and the glass scattered in all directions. Car 88 was only slightly damaged. The motorman of No. 65 had a narrow escape, and just managed to get clear in time. There were very few passengers in either of the cars at the time of the collision. One of them, a middle-aged man, in Car 65, got rather a severe shaking, auxl was attended by Dr. Murray, but it was found that lie had not been seriously injured, and he was able to proceed on his homeward way unaided. A lady passenger in Car 88 became greatly concerned when the cars first collided, and excitedly rushed from the inside of the car, and,' stepping off before she could be prevented, she fell sprawling on to the road. After the second collision she came along, apparently none the worse for her adventure, and demanded a number of parcels which she had left behind. The damaged car was eventually taken to the Ponsonby barn.
