London, October 22. < The report of the Railway Commission, which recommends that central conciliation boards be abolished, and that the decision of the chairman of a sectional board shall be final, is adversely criticised by the rail way men's leaders. None of them has a good word for it, but Mr. T. Burt (the veteran Labour member who was returned as a Liberal at last election) declares that the report makes for peace. In the matter of recognition of their organisations the men have gained tin important point. ■ Mr. Williams, secretary of. the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, states that the report is destructive of collective bargaining, and Mr. Thomas, the society's organising secretary, describes it as bitterly disappointing. Some of the railway managers are surprised that recognition of the unions in any form has been allowed, but they do not anticipate that the Companies will reject the award.
OTHER DISPUTES. •TIME FOR LITHGOW FINES. Sydney. October 23. '. Judge Scholes has extended till November 6 the time for the payment of fines imposed on September 19 on a number of strikers in connection with the Lithgow ironworks strike. Hobaet, October 20. The butchers' strike, which has lasted for a month, has now collapsed. : SIGNS OF SURRENDER. (Received October 24, 1 a.m.) ]:. Hobaet, October 23. Mr. Ogden, a Labour member of the Legislative Assembly, who has toured the Mount Lyell strike district, reports that there are great hopes of an early settlement. It is inferred that the men are now willing to abandon their attitude regarding the reinstatement of White.
