During the fifth series of wool sales, which have just closed, 58,000 bales were sold to Home buyers, 40,000 to Continental purchasers, and 2500 to American buyers. The number of bales held ever is 27,000. Continental buyers have been dealing in fine merinos, whilst Yorkshire buyers operated largely in slipes and greasy crossbreds. Compared with the July closing rates fine merinos are unchanged. Average sorts have generally declined by five per cent. New Zealand scoureds are in strong request and . unchanged. Medium scoureds declined five'per cent, and inferior 10 per cent. Greasy crossbreds are slightly firmer. Fine and medium, in closing, declined by from five to seven and a-half per cent., and coarse, ruled at from: par to five per cent lower. *

Wednesday. • The following cablegram has been received from the High Commissioner, London, October 10, regarding the closing of the fifth series of the colonial wool sales: — The wool sales have closed with fair demand for all qualities at present market value. Americans are not buying., Trade is good, .and manufacturers are busy, while prospects are favourable, at a reasonable price, provided no further political complications arise on the Continent. A total of 19,000 bales of New Zealand wool are held over. . Estimated values are as follows: Superior merino, llid to .la Id ; medium merino, 9jd to lid ; inferior merino, 7£d to 9d ; fine crossbreds (all grades), lid to Is Id ; medium crossbreds,' 8d to IOJd j coarse crossbreds, 7d to lOd."

LOCAL ADVICES. Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London house, under date October 10: — " Wool sales closed; prices fairly maintained as compared with last season's closing rate£. Merino wools: Super scoured, 5 per cent, to 7$ per cent, lower ; medium sorts scoured, 7i per cent, to 10 per cent, lower ; inferior scoured, 10. per cent, to .'ls* ;■ per cent, lower. Merino wools: Greasy, good quality and condition, par to 5 per cent, lower; greasy, . medium sorts, 5 per cent, to per cent, ■, lower; greasy, inferior, 7£ per cent, to 10 per cent, lower. Crossbred wools : Greasy, fine quality, 7£ per cent, to 10 per cent. |lower ; greasy, medium quality, 5 percent, | to 7£ per cent, lower ; greasy, coarse, par to 5 per cent, lower. Crossbred wools: Scoured, 5 per cent, lower. Slipe wools, 5 per cent, lower. Lambswool: Market prices unchanged. Total net quantity .available amounted to .138,000 bales ; sold to America, 2000 bales ; sold for Home con- ■ sumption, 70,000 bales"} sold to the Continent, 40,000 bales not offered, 18,000 bales; carried forward, '26,000 bales.'' The manager of the Bank of New Zealand has. received the following cable from the London office:—"The sales close firm 'or all kinds of wool. Total quantity held over is 26,000 bales, of which 18,000 bales are New Zealand. There is a good demand for coarse crossbreds. ■ Prospects are, fair." ,
