MEETINGS.

- AUCKLAND PRESBYTERY. The Auckland Presbytery met lilt evening, the Rev. A. Millar (Moderator) presiding:. The Rev. W. Trotter moved, " That this Presbytery, feeling keenly the manifold hindrances to the" progress of the Gospel, and feeling also the moral and spiritual degradation of the people due to the traffic in strong drink, would urge all the members and adherents, of the Church - within the bounds to advance local no-license and.Dominion prohibition by'striking out the. top line in both papers at the forthcoming poll." The Bev. I. Jolly seconded the motion, and it was carried unanimously without any discussion. Sir. Jolly read the report of „ the committee set up to in i quire into the Rev. W. Day's application to join the Presbyterian Church, and it was resolved to recommend to the favourable consideration ot the Assembly: Mr. Day's admission to the Church, and that the one year's probation be dispensed with. The Bev. C. Terry presented a scheme tot raising money for church extension work in North Auckland and other country districts, and after lengthy discussion it .was decided to send the scheme to the Church Extension Committee tor consideration. , The same recommendation* was adopted with regard to Mr. John Saunders, who is now on his way out from England.

MOUNT. WELLINGTON ROAD BOARD. The Mount Wellington Road Board met on Monday. Present: Mr. I. Wyroer (chairman) and Messrs. T. ; Hamlin, A. T. Thompson, J. 'Wood, and George Kay. ; The Otahuhu Road Board wrote stating, in reply to the Board's communication, that they declined to sanction any further ■ expense in Portage Road at present. "The Otahuhu Road . Board also • intimated that they approved of the joint boards acquiring 84 acres of ' ltnd at St. Ann's bridge for; a quarry site, and .was agreeable that the same, if obtained, should be vested in the two boards. The chairman reported having interviewed the Minister and the UnderSecretary of Lands on this matter with ;favouri; able results, which' was considered .very satisfactory. The sub-committee appointed to deal with the tenders received for the supplying of 500 cubic yards of picked metal from Mount Wellington quarry reserve reported accepting the offers of Messrs Malpno and Smith. Their action was ratified. A ■ letter was read from the New Zea land Drug Company, Limited, stating that they were willing to construct a septic tank forthwith and : remedy as ;• far as possible the. emitting of acid fumes from their Westfield works. It was resolved that the application' for an offensive trade permit be deferred for one month in order to see if the work is carried out. Application was made by the Union Oil, Soap, and Candle Company, Limited, to erect a large tank at their works. ; It was resolved that permission be given subject to same being plotted" on the recent extension plan. The clerk reported that, according to orders, he had instructed Messrs. Reed and Bailey, the '■ Board's 1, solicitors, to take proceedings against the, Auckland Meat Company, Limited," and Mr. Alf. Goodare for failing to comply % with the notices served upon them by the District Health Department. The Auckland Meat Company, Limited, wrote stating that the matters complained of would receive attention forthwith. ,The clerk : was instructed to state in reply that any t negotiations to stay : the : proceedings must be made to the Board's solicitors. Mr. Wymer reported the .work he and Mr. Harbutt, of the Otahuhu Bead Board; had done in Wellington in connection with the Mangere bridge. They said that in y< presenting the petition of the 12 local bodies asking that provision be made in the proposed construction for inland navigation, the Hon. J. A. Millar stated that the Government engineers had reported adversely in regard to Mr. Taylor's scheme of embankments and lock, and said therein that silting would take place at the Onehunga Wharf, therefore he did not favour such a soheme, .but had no objection to a swing opening being provided for future development so, far as navigation was concerned, providing the local bodies subscribed to the cost , The report was received and the deputation thanked for their efforts. in connection therewith. It was resolved that nameplates be fixed' at all the Junctions of the principal ~roads in the 4 district, and that , Messrs. Wymer, Thompson, and Wood be a sub-committee, with power to act and complete the erection. On the motion of Mr. Thompson, seconded by Mr. Wood, it was resolved: that Messrs. Wymer,'Hamlin, Kay, and Wood be a sub-committee to decide on a site for the new Road Board office, and that a recommendation be made to the next Board meeting a month hence. The whole of the Board was deputed to go into the question of carrying out the following works:—Footpath along Great South Road, Portage Road improvement, removing cutting, etc.; Otahuhu-Panmure Bond improvement, fillings and footpath; and to consider the estimates prepared by the clerk (Mr. A. Boss), and bring down their recommendations to the next meeting of the Board. The clerk submitted a • statement showing the state of the Board's finances. Expressions of satisfaction were given by the members on the sound position that the Board's finances were in, and the best thanks of the Board were tendered to Mr. Albert- Roes for the information as tabulated.

SPORTS PROTECTION LEAGUE. A largely-attended meeting of Parnell sporting enthusiasts was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Manukau Road, last evening for the purpose of forming a Parnell branch of the Sports Protection League. Mr. J. H. Brown was elected chairman. Mr. R. A. Armstrong (secretary of the Auckland Sports Protection Association), who was present by invitation, outlined the history of the movement, and answered questions at the close of his remarks. Mr. H. McNaugbton moved, " That this meeting of sportsmen, electors of Parnell, forms itself into the : Parnell branch of the Sports Protection League, to give effect to the objects of the league in the Parnell electorate." Mr. K. S Briggs (Mayor of Parnell), in seconding the motion, said the time had arrived when the moderate man, if he was to retain any of his pleasures, must organise and prevent the extremists from making further encroachment. He had no doubt but that all forms of sport in which there was any element of chance would, unless protected, be swept away by the Puritans. He honed to see the Sports Protection League grow and prosper. The motion was carried unanimously The following officers were elected :— riroaident. Mr. J. H. Brown; committee, Messrs. E Baldwin, J.
