The late Major-General was a prominent officer in the army, and spent a great deal of time in India. He was always a ke-n sportsman, and after he retired from the army some 15 or-16 years ago he paid i visit to New Zealand for the trout-fish. ing. After that Major-General Hogg, paid periodical visits to the Dominion"ndp til about a year ago he took up his perffjl manent residence in Eotorua, visiting 1 Auckland frequently. At the time of his i death he was contemplating leaving Auckland for Tauranga where he had taken a'rl j furnished cottage, and on the night prior to his death he bad been discussing with a friend his arrangements for the summer.® His death will be regretted by a larga circle of friends. An inquest concerning Major-General li Hogge's death was held by the Coroner (Mr. T. Gresham) yesterday. Dr. Humphrey Haines, a retired medical practitioner, gave evidence of identifies. tion. The deceased, he said, was about, 73 years of age, and was a single man. He retired from the Imperial army some years ago, after having attained the rank of : - major-general. Witness last saw the dtceased alive on Friday evening at witness's residence, and his health then appeared to be as usual." Staff-Sergeant-Major Atwill deposed to '-'J. the circumstances of Major Hogge's death. 1 Charles Kalman, manager of the Central Hotel, said he had known the deceased for about nine years, and he was staying-fi-at the Central Hotel from last Wednesday.' The deceased appeared quite welt, •., and in good spirits.
