EAST COAST RAILWAY.
GISBORNE-MOTU SECTION. [BV TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORUESPOXDENT.] Gisborne, Monday. Steady and satisfactory progress is being made in the construction of the GisborneMotu railway. Gangs of platelayers are busy, and rails are laid down as far as the Devil's Elbow, 36 miles from Gisborne and three miles from Eakfturoa. The temporary bridges are being, gradually replaced .by permanent structures, and everything is done to expedite these works. ' Concrete piers for the permanent bridge near., Hutchinson's have been erected. The deep excavations, and the erecting of piers near Devil's Elbow, are progressing satisfactorily. - The six main girders of the Otoko viaduct are finished, and the contractors— Griffiths and Co., of Westportexpect to complete this great work by the end of November next. When the viaduct' is finished a further section of the railway will be opened for traffic, and facilities will thereby be given for greater progress in ballasting and other work. As to the direction, of The line beyond Motu township, a' large staff of surveyors is busily engaged o'ft'ihe two rival routes—the Pakihi route and the Papamoa route, tho latter being by way of Muramoko and Whitikau.
