WASTING MUNICIPAL FUNDS.

Sir,l wish through the medium of your journal to call public attention to what I call a gross waste of ratepayers' money. Last Monday week a gang of men, accompanied by the steam-roller, made their appearance on the west side of Queenstreet, above the Town Hall. The roller was employed in tearing up the metal still remaining in the street._ Tho men, however, were employed in throwing said loosened metal on to the centre of the street, while others with picks were busy in removing as good a foundation as could be made for any street, thus opening up the street to its clay formation, with the object of pitching the road with large metal, an expense absolutely unnecessary. The loosening tho surface metal was a reasonable thing to do, but to put a staff of men with picks to take up a foundation that has been consolidating for the last 40 years is, in my opinion, throwing the Council's revenue away. All the roadway needed was that the new mefcd should be placed on the old, and, being rolled, it would have formed as good a road as it is possible to make, and at one-third of the cost. A ItATErATER.
