FIREMEN'S WAGES.

TROUBLE IN WELLINGTON. [BT TELF.GR.IHn. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Saturday. A RI'MOCR of trouble between the Fire Brigade staff and the City Council was about to-day. It was even said that the firemen had threatened to strike. The men are not satisfied with the reply of the Council to their petition for better pay. They claim that the present rate is not a fair living wage for the work engaged in, and does not compare favourably with, other centres. Increases amounting . to £91 were granted at the last meeting of the Council, but the men are far from satisfied with, them, and \o-day they asked for a more favourable settlement. As the demands axe urgent, the Mayor summoned the Council together and heard the wishes of the men. A committee was appointed to meet them again on Wednesday, and, meanwhile, neither side is prepared to make any statement.
