PERSONAL ITEMS FROM LONDON.

[from our own correspondent.] London, September 1. Mr. R. J. Coates (Auckland), who toured the Holy Land and Egypt, and has now motored through Great Britain, has left for France. Mr. and Mrs. T. Burton (Auckland) and Miss Buxton are to embarn. at Marseilles for New Zealand on October 13, after a month's tour on the Continent. Miss Preece (Auckland), who has ween in England for 18 months, will return by the Zieten, and after spending a short time in Sydney should reach New Zealand in December. Mrs. W. L. Luxford (Hamilton) will spend some time here, returning ultimately via Vancouver, with her youngest son, -ox. J. Hector Luxford, who is not due to reach England from New Zealand until about Christmas time.

Mr. John Holmes (Wellington) has just returned from a visit to Ireland, where he was endeavouring to interest an important co-operative butter company in the purchase of New Zealand produce to meet its winter requirements.

At the New Zealand Government Office during this week the following Aucklanders have entered their names:—Mr. TV. H. Parr (Waikato), Archdeacon Walsh, Mrs. F. W. King, Mr. W. o. R. Bloomfield, and Mr. M. H. Larney (Te Aroha).

The Hon. W. Pember Reeves is at present in Portsmouth, attending the meetings of the British Association in his capacity as chairman of the section of economics. He is contributing to the Daily Chronicle a series of articles on " How to End Strikes."

Dr. Percy Foote (Auckland) at present holds the position of house physician at the Royal Hospital at- Portsmouth. Up to the middle of July he was assistant housesurgeon at the Poplar Hospital. xlis mother and sister hive settled down at Hampstead.

, Mr. A. A. Martin (Auckland) has since his arrival here bought a motor car, and, accompanied by Mrs. xuartin and his family, he has completed a 2000-mile tour of England, Scotland, and Wales. He intends presently to make a tour of the English Riviera, Cornwall, and to return to New Zealand in December.

The Venerable Archdeacon Walsh (Auckland) has been in Ireland for three months, making his headquarters at Port Arlington, and touring from there- about the south and -west of the country. On the way to London lately he put in three weeks in Scotland, but until he sails on October 2 by the Bremen, London will be hie base. New Zealand should be reached about the middle of January, after a stay in Melbourne.

There is now to be no interregnum in the High Commissionership for New Zealand. Sir . William Hall-Jones was to have left at the end' of August, after a two months' extension of his original term, but it has now been arranged that he will continue in office until the appointment of his successor, which is expected . after the general election. Lady Jones has had an enjoyable rest in the bracing air of Margate, and is now much _ stronger than she has been for some time past.

During the Dublin horse show week quite a large number of Mew Zealanders made their headquarters in the Irish capital, and-others were the guests of Lord and Lady Plunket, at Old Connaught House, Bray, while the show was in prorss. These latter were: Mr. and j>irs. E. G. Rhodes, Mr. and Mrs. J. Studholme (Taihape), Mr. J. Williamson (Auckland), and Major Percy Johnson (Mount Torlesse). One day, seven members of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry (who had formed part of the, New Zealand Coronation Contingent, and who happened to be in Dublin), were entertained at luncheon at Old Connaught House by Lord Plunket and their honorary colonel, Lady Plunket. They spent a very pleasant clay on the estate. The party included: Major P. H. Johnson, Messrs. L. W. Blunden, J. Basett, W. O. Berryman, J. Allan, J. Chapman, G. N. McLean, and L. R. Macfarlane. , One evening Mr. and Mrs. A. E. G. Rhodes and Mr. and Mrs. J. Studholme •were the guests at an official dinner given by the Lord-Lieutenant and the.Countess of Aberdeen. On another evening a number of New Zealanders were invited to a ball given. _by the Right Honorable Mr. Birrell (Chief-Secretary for Ireland). Altogether they were well looked after, and they express' appreciation of the generous hospitality extended to them.
