KNOCKED DOWN BY A CAR.
MA N SERIOUSLY INJURED.
CONVERSING ON THE TRAM TRACK.
The danger of standing on tho tramways track without keeping a sharp look-out for approaching ears was forcibly demonstrated shortly after noon yesterday, when two men John Lynch and John Ansenne, who - re conversing while standing on the tram rails, were knocked clown by a Ponsonby tramear, with the result, that Ansonno was rather seriously injured. The two men met in Wcllesleystreet West, by die Opera. House, and started to walk across the road. By the time they reached the down tramline they noticed a ear corning up Wellosley-street. They stopped and engaged in conversation while waiting for tho up car to pass, but apparently they did not hear a ear that ff aa coining down tho street. This car humped into both men and knocked them down. Lynch was thrown clear of the car and Anscnne, after rolling over several times, was finally left lying between tho two sets of rails. The car kept on until it got to the bottom of the street-, going about a chain or two before stopping. Beyond some deep cuts on hands and elbows, and a severe shaking, Lynch was little the worse for the adventure. Anserine, however, was rendered unconscious, and was removed to tin; hospital, where ho is suffering from concussion of the brain and shock. Up to a late hour last night he had not- recovered consciousness. Tho motorman, Peter liirkout, states that he noticed the men on the line and called out to them and King tho gong, and also applied the emergency . brake. Tho car, which was going at tho rate of about live or six miles an hour, slackened pace, but did not stop until it had gono a couple of lengths. The car did not stop sooner owing to tho rails being greasy.
