CROWN LANDS BOARD.

A meetixg of tho Auckland Crown Lands Board was held yesterday, tho members present being: Tho Commissioner (Mr. E. C. Gold Smith), Messrs. A.- R. Harris, M. W. Armstrong, J. Trounson, and W. Johns. The last-named member, who took his seat,- for the first time, was welcomed to tho Board by the Commissioner and tho other members, Mr. Harris, as on© who had known Mr. Johns for many years, paying a special tribute to his qualifications for a Boat on tho Board. Tho Pukekohe West ■ Road Board wrote protesting against tho Pukekohe Town Board having exclusive rights over tho Pukekoho recreation reserve, as it was a roservo for the whole district, and much used for watering stock, and they feared that tho Town Board may prevent them from securing water. Tho two Boards are to meet to discuss the matter. It was stated that the gazetting of tho reserve had been deferred in the meantime. The usual routine business was disposed of. GRAMMAR SCHOOL BOARD. * The Board of Governors of tho Auckland Grammar School met yesterday afternoon. Sir Maurico O'Rorkc presided, and thera wero also present Professor A. P. W. Thomas, Professor E. D. Brown, Dr. E. Roberton, and Mr. D. B. Wallace. A financial statement showed that tho receipts from January 1 to May 24 had been £6894 15s lOd, and the expenditure £5450 12s Id, leaving a. credit balance of £1444 6s 9d. Leave of absence for five weeks was granted to tho Board's architect, Mr. dimming. PONSONBY LITERARY SOCIETY. The weekly meeting of tiro Pousonby Literary Society was held at Leys Institute on Wednesday evening. A good number of members and visitors attended. Mr. D. Doowra occupied the chair. The business of tho evening was the "Magazine." After an. editorial by Mr. G. 11. Stubbs, the members read their contributions as follows: — "Music," Mr. Bennett; "Wisdom," MissBennett; "A New-Theory," Mr.. Simpson; A Cruise in Hauraki Gulf," Mr. Codlin; "My First Night at Sea,?.' Mr. McMath; "Winter evenings," Miss Ross; "Education," Mr. G. W. Murray; "Our Ideals," Mr. R. E. Dowle. 'A number of very instructive extracts were read by Mr. Murray and Mr. Bennett \ W.C.T.U. ' ' A meeting of the W.C.T.U.- was held yesterday afternoon, when the Rev. J, Olpherfc gave an address on " No-license Work The speaker pointed out that £3,£03,438 was spent in Now Zealand in 1910 on drink. This amount, he said, was greater than tho valuta of all hotel property in New Zealand. Tho average amount- per head was £3 13s lid. In license districts the *arink "bill for 1910 showed the amount per head to be £4 3s 12d, and in no-lieonse areas only 18s Oid per head. The speaker urged upon all present to work in the interests of no-license. AVONDALE ROAD BOARD. Tho members of tho Avon dale Road Board on.Wednesday afternoon, last made their cus-' tomary annual inspection of tho roads and bridges under their jurisdiction, and in the evening held a special meeting, at which there wero-prcsent: "Messrs. J. Potter (chairman). T. H. Spargo, D. Campbell, E. Copsoy. F. Walker. C. Grey, Wyman, and tho clerk (Mr. F. Bluck). The main object of tho meeting was to discuss details of tho expenditure of tho loan of £15,500 which has been provisionally granted by tho Government. Tho chairman proposed that tho sum of £10,000 be expended during tho first year, and after discussion this was agreed to. Tho Board resolved that tho engineer bo instructed to prepare plans and specifications for the formation and metalling of Manukaus Road, Roselxtnk Road, New Windsor Road, and East Road, such plans to bo available for tho Board's perusal on the first Wednesday in July. These roads, in tho opinion of the Board, shook! bo grouped together for tho first expenditure of loan money. On fcb.B motion of Mr. Copsey, seconded by Mr. Walker, it was resolved to appoint a working foreman. It was resolved that Messrs. Spargo, Campbell, and Walker bo a subcommittee to draw up specifications and call for tenders for road formation of about 10 chains on the New Windsor Road, towards which the Mount Roskill Road Board is contributing £12 10s, and residents in the vicinity £2, tenders to bo returnablo at tho July meeting. Messrs. _ Spargo, Campbell, and Wyman wero appointed a sub-committee to see to tho repair of the bridge and culvert on Manukau Road, with power to act.
