RAILS IN QUAY-STREET.
!i A PROPOSED ALTERATION.
. The city engineer reported the receipt from the engineer of the Harbour Board of a plan showing a proposed railway ■ line running centrally down Quay-street. He strongly recommended that an earnest attempt should be made to have the rails laid close to the kerb on the north side, where they could be fenced off, with paved entrances to' each of the wharves, while an express stand could be placed ; against the fence, thus leaving the southern side of the street' clear for traffic. It was recommended by the Works Committee that the city engineer should require ' application to be made to the Council by the person or body proposing to lay down and use the rails.
The town clerk explained that the only question was one of procedure, as to whether the Harbour Board or the Rail'.way Department would have control of the railway. The engineer's recommendation was approved/
