PRESS COMMENT.
SOME INDIGNANT EMPLOYEES. [BY TELEGRAPH. ASSOCIATION.] "- : Wellington, Tuesday. Before commencing proceedings at the Conciliation Council this morning one .of the. representatives of the Carpenters and Joiners' Union,- Mr. J. Barras, stated he had been instructed by the union to bring before tie Council the matter of the Dominion newspaper making comment in the shape of a leading article upon some of the business still engaging the attention of the Council. He referred to and read the paper's comment respecting the utterances of the Commissioner (Mr. Hally) having reference to the claim for wages and hours, and said that he considered it unfair that the newspaper should have commented •in the manner it had. After some discussion it was agreed by a majority of the Council ■present that the matter should be referred to-the Labour Department by letter, asking them to take .the necessary steps to rectify the occurrence. The representatives of the employees voted on one side and the employers' deputies on the other, and the Court decided the matter by voting -with 'the former. On Friday last, when the dispute was first heard, Mr. Hally said he considered the claims of the union for a •week of 40 hours and an increase of wages from Is 4xl to Is 8d per hour were unreasonable.
