COMMERCIAL.

jute share-market was weaker yesterday. In mining lines Waihis, as compared with £4 17s 3dj the last sal© registered the previous day, sold at from £4 16s to £4-. 15s to £4 15s3d to £4 14s 9d to £4- 16s, leaving further buyers at £4 16s, sellers at £4 16s 3d. JWaihi Grand Junctions were disposed of .at |30s9d and 30s 6d, and further buyers wero 'deft at the latter price, sellers at the former. IWaibi Beefs Consolidated were dealt in at Sa 4d. Talismans were transferred at 51s, the market closing with buyers at 50s 9d, fellers at. 51s. In investment stocks a parcel of New Zealand Insurances changed bands at 88s, and more were inquired ■ for at the same price, with supplies available at 89s. JTaupiri Coal Mines- sold at 21s 3d. The present climatic conditions have boon iffectivein sustaining the demand for a largo number of seasonable lines, and tho wholesale merchants have had stocks considerably depleted in a good many commodities. Orders continue to come to hand in satisfactory volume, and some attention is now being paid to forward' ordorings.

Conditions generally in eommoroial circles are characterised by a. buoyancy which is indicative of a "free circulation of money, and at the present time there is nothing In sight which would point to a»cessation of this in the near future.

A number of the wholesale houses aro busy stocktaking, and this operation is showing, practically without exception, that tho period under review has-been satisfac-' lory from every aspect.- :

'■;■' Figs: Although what can be termed the Christmas trade is, now over, demand-con-tinues for small packages, and with very light parcels close at hand, prico shows an advance for spot holdings. •

Glucose: Current quotation remains rather high, and business is of hand-to-mouth nature only. . V „ . -. ' ■

-Dates: Market shows a tendency to advance, due, more than anything else, to heavy demand from the largo consuming centres. - ■ ■ '

"Almonds: "Vol en oi as are being inquired for, and as the prico named is looked upon as low, business is passing for prompt delivery, v ■ - - , .

- Lima Beans: Stocks aro light, with price normal. Forward business quiet.

Desiccated Coooanut: Indications point .to a further decline in the near future, but owing to short '"supplies on the , spot full prices are being obtained for available quantities. - ,„ ; , ■'■' . . ... -.

Currants: Stocks are now in rather low compass, with demand normal for the time of year. - Forward market retains its strengt, and there'' is no prospect of a'-de-cline. ■ ■;'''-'■"■ ■" '

Seeded Raisins: The market is very lightly 'stocked, and i further shipments are anxiously {.waited to fill orders. • ' v v

Pimento: Price named for parcels on the water is favourable; market more likely to advance than otherwise.

'Sultanas: l The Californian fruit continues •in strong demand; forward market very firm. .. ■ :.-- ~ ■■;.-'-

Prunes: \ Good inquiry exists with stocks light; higher prices will: probably rule ■in •the near future. , • Sardines: Principal demand is on smoked .■varieties at present time; well-known brands meeting with ready sale. . .

J Hides: Owing to no sale being held the previous Tuesday;' double * catalogues were .offered last week,,-' keen competition being forthcoming from both local manufacturers, and Southern, Australian, and Canadian representatives. -.;

Sheepskins: Mostly pelts and lambskins coming to hand ; now, with some country 'dry ull-woolled skins. - Prices remain ; the same. ' , v ' -..' ;■' .. ■

Tallow: Market continues very firm.

Potatoes: The market is about the same. 'Deliveries from the country are keeping up very well. The demand is pretty well equal to the supply. The price is £1 10s.

* Onions: Offerings now aro increasing, and the market is well supplied. • An export demand.is expected, but we do not see how this : can come about unless at Very much reduced prices. Melbourne can supply any outside demand at about £2 15s f.o.b. Stocks here are ample for present requirements, and. the price is £5 10s.

-Oats: There is no change to report. Buying is about the same, and of a hand-to-mouth character. ' Stocks here are light, and •the price is 2s 9d. •. ,■„■.■■, ■•■■■•■.....■

,v;Chaff:. Local is offering very freely, but buyers : holding off until they, are sure of the condition. Melbourne is still selling well. . Southern, principally. Blenheim, ; ; is coming forward in small shipments. Local and Melboumec liaff is selling at £5 10a, Southern at £6. .

': Fowl Wheat: r There is very, little offering from* the South. The weather .is still keeping Sno;there,; and harvesting is in. full swing.- The price is •3s lOd. : , ::Maize: The ~ Taaman--:lHbug'h: b ) 494- sacks, and the Ngatiawa 525 sacks from the coast. Holders are still asking 2s 9d ex store, with a fair demand. : ■: -

Bran is in very good demand at £5 10a, with moderate stock.

Pollard is still very difficult to procure, and tho demand is far greater than the supply. The price for same is £6 17s 6d. . Flour: Quotations remain at £9 10s for Southern flour,"- lab.,; Southern ports, and £11 5s for Northern. Roller flour.

Fungus:'-: There is not much coming forward, and the demand-is slack. The nominal quotation is 4£d, for dry lots. Flax: The deliveries for 23 days of January are 1234 bales, equal to 245 tons. The London market ..continues :in a very dull condition, with sales very difficult to effect. The local quotations are nominally £28 for fine, if procurable; £16 5s for g.f.a.q.; £15 15s for f.a.q., £14 for common.

Tow: The quantity sent in for 23 days of January' is 52,0 bales, equal to 50 tons. This is selling at an average of £6 for export, purposes. "■■'.■:" '

> Indian Toas: At the Calcutta tea sales. No. 28, the closing sale of 1910, some 31,000 packages were offered. The sales passed with a swing from start to finish,, all descriptions being dearer. The quality was much on a par with the last few" auctions, and while the general average was fairly good, the autumnal kinds were not up to last season. Common teas, both leai and broken, marked a furthor rise of from 2 to 3 pies, and were eagerly competed for by all markets at the advanced rates. Medium and fine grades were also dearer, owing 10 increased "competition on the part of the London and local blending houses. Dusts and fannings-continued to realise extraordinary rates, and very few of them sold under Bd, while the best parcels realised Bid to lOdper lb. ;

KAURI GUM.

■ The arrivals for 23 days of January are 463 tons, which shows an increase of 35 tons for the corresponding period of last month, •when 428 tons arrived on this market There is very little change to report. Business is still confined to the medium and lower grades of both black and white. Jho demand for the .superior grades of ordinary is of a very limited character. All kindsof chips are meeting with a fair amount of competition. ■ (Palo Select: This is not being asked for. Stocks are. still light. " Ordinary: A few sales have been effected '" in really good rese.raped ordinary, but inferior parcels can only be quitted at a low valuation. Sorted superior three-quarter scraped ordinary is meeting with very little attention, with buyers hanging off unsorlod -, parcels of this grade. Medium ordinary and extra well-cleaned washed nuts, however, are salable, with a little business - doing in coated washed nuts, free- from chips and dust. Good swamp, with heart : in it, medium swamp and poor white swamp are all selling as they come forward, if in 1 dry condition. ,-. East Coast: Stocks held here are very small. Business is again quiet. Black: Good rescrapod can be quitted. :: Bold lumps, sound and well-cleaned, aro ■ wanted. There is more disposition to oper- -'.•■- ate in sorted three-quarter-scraped steel, but buyers want it at a reduction. Medium black and hard black nuts are in request, and a little business is doing in poor.black nuts, mixed with white- swampy nuts. Bush: Palo reseraped and clean bush, of good colour, aro not particularly asked for, and the demand for dark sorts and Pickings is slack, but there aro buyers of bold bled bush, if free from soft. Chips and Dust: Bright chips and dust are not in favour just at present.
