« ' THE TAUPAKI FATALITY.

'An inquest was held at Taupaki yester- "■ day. before - Mr. -T. ' , Gresham, Coroner, ■ concerning the death of Arthur John Backhouse, who was drowned while bathing in a creek; on Sunday. Joseph Philemon . Backhouse, brother of deceased,- and ' Thomas Denny, . stated that they and the deceased were bathing , together. His companions, after calling for help, dived repeatedly in order to try and rescue him, but their efforts proved unsuccessful, and they at last became so exhausted • - . that a settler named Buxton, who had arrived upon the scene, had to help them . out of the water. Another settler named . Cobb then came up/and learning what was - wrong, dived into the water fully dressed •••-'•'and was. successful -in recovering the body. ■ - The jury returned a verdict that death was due to accidental drowning. The " foreman, on behalf of the jury, expressed sympathy with the parents of the de- ; ceased, who, unfortunately, lost another son by an accident about 13 months ago.
