ACCIDENTAL DROWNING.
« ' THE TAUPAKI FATALITY.
'An inquest was held at Taupaki yester- "■ day. before - Mr. -T. ' , Gresham, Coroner, ■ concerning the death of Arthur John Backhouse, who was drowned while bathing in a creek; on Sunday. Joseph Philemon . Backhouse, brother of deceased,- and ' Thomas Denny, . stated that they and the deceased were bathing , together. None . of them could.swim well, and the deceased • was . using a pair >of "water-wings.' He lent them to his brother for. a while, and i' directly afterwards sank "and was drowned. His companions, after calling for help, dived repeatedly in order to try and rescue him, but their efforts proved unsuccessful, and they at last became so exhausted • - . that a settler named Buxton, who had arrived upon the scene, had to help them . out of the water. Another settler named . Cobb then came up/and learning what was - wrong, dived into the water fully dressed •••-'•'and was. successful -in recovering the body. ■ - The jury returned a verdict that death was due to accidental drowning. The " foreman, on behalf of the jury, expressed sympathy with the parents of the de- ; ceased, who, unfortunately, lost another son by an accident about 13 months ago.
