RAILWAY GOODS TRAFFIC.
MORE LAND NEEDED.
MINISTER'S INSPECTION.
The limited area of land available for the development of the railway goods traffic adjacent to the Auckland Station is presenting a somewhat difficult problem to the Railway Department in the consideration of future needs. The matter was mentioned by the Minister for Railways (Hon. J. A. Millar) to the chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr. A. J. Entrican) during the trip round the harbour yesterday. Mr. Millar asked "what further land would bo reclaimed by the Board 011 the eastern side of the city. The proposed eastern reclamation, as shown on the plan of the proposed further harbour improvements, was pointed out, and the Minister said it was not unlikely that the Department would .require to take a portion of the land to be reclaimed to the seaward of the King's Drive for the purpose of meeting the growing needs of the goods traffic. Unless some land was available here., he said, it might become a question of removing the goods shed, etc., to Newmarket, and thus making Auckland a passenger station only. It was agreed that the Minister should inspect the site of the proposed reclamation during his present visit.
