THE COAL TRADE.
RUMOURS OF A STRIKE.
Rumours which were current some months ago of the possibility of a coal strike have been revived within the past few days. Business firms, it appears, are a.gain taking in reserve stocks of coal, and the action of a number of unions in cancelling their registration gives colour to the suggestion that a strike may be pending. There are, however, optimists in the coal trade who scout the idea of a strike, and hold to the view that the cancellation of registration by unions only indicates that a feeling of noconfidence in the Arbitration Court is prevalent among the workers. The Moii. J. A. Millar, Minister for Railways and Labour, could not enlighten a reporter on the position. He admitted that the Railway Department had lately taken in large supplies* of coal, but this was in accordance with a decision recently arrived at to always be ready to meet trouble. He had nothing to say with regard to the cancellation of registration by the miners.
