SWIMMING.
The latest novelty events in Sydney just now are "The Merry Widow Hat" and "The Hobble Skirt" races. A Sydney paper remarks that the latter contest should put the coolness and -kill of the swimmer to a searching test. Anyone who can make headway through the water enveloped in a " Gobble skirt" should be able to do so tied, up in a sack. The Lord Mayor of Melbourne and the Minister for Customs attended the carnival of the Melbourne Club on a recent Saturday. The special attraction was the appearance of Beatiiefvaire in the 300 yds Victorian championship, which he won easily. His time was 4m. 103.
