SEAMEN'S WAGES.
A PROVISIONAL AGREEMENT.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.— (Received December 30, 10 p.m.) Melbourne, December 30. As the result of a conforenee between the registrar of the Federal Arbitration Court and representatives of the Steamshipowners' Federation and Federation of Seamen's Unions a provisional agreement has been reached for continuing work until an award-of the Court or new and final agreement between the owners and seamen is obtained. The two parties agreed to recommend the acceptance of the provisional agreement, which oper ates from January 1, to their respective organisations. It is understood that the agreement provides for a compromise, both as regards rates of pay and conditions. (Received December 31, 1.15 a.m.) Melbourne, December 30. Both the Shipowners' Federation and the Federated Seamen's Union have notified the President of the Arbitration Court that they are agreeable to accept the provisional agreement, which will giant an all round increase of 10s per month in wages, and fix. the overtime rate at Is 6d, instead of Is 3d per hour previously ruling, and concede preference to unionists. The seamen asked for £1 per month increase. A conference will be held to endorse the provisional as the new fixed agreement.
