THE CHRISTMAS HAMPER.
A UNIQUE CLUB
Arthur Griffiths, grocer, of Woolloomooloo, was proceeded against in a Sydney Court, last week for having sold liquor without being the holder of a license.
According to the evidence, Griffiths sold Christmas hampers for; 255, amongst the contents being a Ijottle of wine. Constable Brown joined the Christmas Hamper Gift Club promoted by Griffiths, paid the full amount, and received a hamper. Griffiths explained that, wine was given free, each bottle bearing an intimation that if was given away with tho vendor's compliments. There were 524 members in the club, who paid Is 3d a week, so that the cost of the goods would 'lie defrayed by Christinas.
Griffiths was fined £30, in default six months' imprisonment.
