TWENTY MILLIONS IN STIPENDS.
BUSINESS SIDE OF PREACHING.
[from our own. correspondent.] London, September 16. A United Status Government report just published. shows that during 1910 £20.000.000 will be paid in stipends alone in the United States to ministers of the gospel.
It is also calculated that the congregational expenses, missions, and extensions involve an outlay this year, of £40,000,000 more. These figures are higher than ever before.
According to the report there are 164,830 Christian ministers in the United States, besides 1084 Jewish rabbis.
Baptists and Methodists have more than half the whole number, a fact accounted for by their large number of small churches, especially in rural districts. The highest salary ever offered a minister tot preach in New York, and given out in a public call, was £3600 a year and a house, offered last year by the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, Manhattan. and declined ! Several ministers receive £3000 a year, and there are a dozen or more who get £2400. These salaries are the highest in the world, London and Berlin averages being hardly more 'than £600 a year.. A London minister who gets £600 a year is near the top. In New York he is near the bottom.
