The acting-superintendent of the Waihi mine, in reporting for the four-weekly period ended August 6 last, refers to operations at No. 9 level as follows—• No. 9 Level.—Royal lode east of No. 5 shaft crosscut: The crosscut at 765 ft. proved the width to be 22ft, worth an average value of £1 6 lid per ton. The crosscut was sampled in four equal sections, measuring from tho north wall. The following are the details of the sampling:—First section, worth £2 2s 4d per ton ; second, 2s Id ; third, £2 Ids 3d; fourth, 7s 3d. It is our intention to commence a prospecting! crosscut south-east from the 765 ft mark during the coming period. This will be known as reptile south-east crosscut. West of No. 5 shaft, south crosscut: The level was advanced 59ft, making a total of 354 ft; sft of sulphide ore is exposed in the face, with the north wall in hand. The following sample results were obtained as the drive advanced:At 300 ft, worth £8 9s 5d per ton; 305 ft, £1 14s lid; 315 ft, £5 ss; 325 ft, 16s 6d. At 300 ft the full width of the lode is 18ft, worth an average value of £7 Is 4d per ton. This shows considerable improvement, both in width and value, compared with a corresponding point on the level above. / Empire Lode.—North section : Kauri pass lias been connected through from No. 8 to 9 levels. Alexandra Lode.West of No. 4 shaft, north crosscut: The level was extended on the course of the lode from 963 ft to 1052 ft, and at the latter point the lode split into two pal'ts, each 6in wide. The value from 951 ft to 1038 ft is 10s 4d per ton. At 1052 ft tho level was turned towards the Edward lode in the direction of Perch pass, and was driven through country to 1086 ft. Tho Edward lode is expected to come to hand in about 24ft of further driving. Northwest crosscut to No. 2 shaft: This has now reached a distance of 144 ft. from Alexandra lode. A 12in vein was met at 83ft in, worth 14s 4d per ton. Martha Lode.—South section, west of No. 4 shaft, north crosscut: The level has been extended 60ft, making a total of 569 ft. The lode is being crosscut at the 500 ft mark; 77ft of the reef is exposed, with the south wall only in hand. The level has been widened from No. 4 shaft north crosscut to 250 ft west, and timbered from Oft to 120 ft. The width token is about 15ft. East of No. 4 shaft, north crosscut: The level has been widened a total length of 180 ft, and timbered for 100 ft. A width of 15ft was token for 80ft of this length. Regina section west of No. 4 shaft, north crosscut: Tho level was extended 12ft, making a total of 467 ft. At the 430 ft mark a very rich vein of sulphide ore was met with, varying in width from 6in to 18in, and dipping very flatly into the south wall. The course was followed by widening along the south side of the level. In the last 10ft of driving tho vein was practically vertical, and has now junctioned with the main lode goingwestward. The following sample results were obtained as the drive advanced:—At 452 ft, worth £1 3s 3d per ton; 457 ft, £14 9s 7d ; 462 ft, £31 5s lOd. Referring to the shafts, the acting-super-intendent writes:—No. 4 shaft: Electrical pumps—The column is now built up to the surface. The foundations at No. 9 level are completed. No. 5 shaft: At No. 10 level the chamber has been opened out on the north fide of the shaft. The C pump drawlift is in position. Tho cistern remains to be excavated."

LOW LEVEL DEVELOPMENTS. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi, Sunday. Recent mine developments have not been responsible for last week's fall in the price of Waihi shares. In fact, _it may be said that operations at the 1000 ft level during the past week or two point to an improvement rather than a deterioration in the values of the main lodes. After determining the width of the Edward reef at the point of intersection in the low level, a start was made to drive both ways on the course of the lode, and for the distance driven on either side of the crosscut ore of payable quality has been followed. As stated in the cable message sent to London oil Friday last, the average value for 35ft in the drive south was £3 4s per ton, and for the balance of the distance since driven the appearance of the ore points to its being quite equal to, if not better than, the section sampled. The Martha reef going west also looks better, and in tho present face should give satisfactory values. Tho drive on the lode in _ this section is in close touch with the point where the Martha at the level overhead (No. 8 plan, level) carries a strong chute of pay ore, one of the stopes 011 the block showing a width of upwards of 40ft of quartz, worth about £4- per ton. The work preparatory to opening up the mine at greater depth, including the installation of pumping plant, etc., is now well forward, and -in thci \course of a few days the management will probably be in a position to commence the work of driving for the Empire reef at the 1150 ft level.

BREMNER'S FREEHOLD. SPECIMENS AND PICKED STONE. The manager of Bremner's Freehold mine, Coromandel, advised _vesterday that ho had secured a further 101b of specimens, and 551b of picked stone. WAIOTAHI. The manager of the Waiotalii Gold Mining Company reports for the week as follows ; — No. 6 Level.—The stopes on, the foot-wall dropper are being continued as usual, and colours of gold are occasionally seen. No. 5 Level.—Tho rise on the Cure reef from the back of the stopes to the No. 4 level is now about completed. • No. 4 Level. From the point where tho rich gold was obtained in the main reef a prospecting crosscut into tho footwall country is now ill hand. The Mary Ann No. 2 level crosscut is in a distance of 469 ft. from the shaft. The main shaft is now down a depth of 16ft below the No. 6 level. Work has, however, been chiefly confined to timbering during tho week. The country in, the shaft is still of a favourable character. Iv Oil AT A REEFS. The superintendent of the Ivomata Reefs mine, in reporting upon the development work carried out during tho four-weekly period ended August 6, states that at No. 8 level No. 1 crosscut east 111 the Komata reefs section was in 59ft, and will be carried 011 for another 10ft. or so, but it was then in far enough to cut Hartridge's leader if it existed 011 that level. At No. 6 level No. 1 crosscut east, in 9ft, was being driven to cut No. 1 reef near the shaft, and about 30ft more of driving would be required to attain tho object in view. At No. 5 love] No. 2 reef in the drive south from the shaft was Ift 6in in width, and was worth £6 a ton. In stoping operations 011 No. 2 reef at, Nos. 4, 5, 6, and 7 levels tho reef, which varied in width from 4ft to 10ft. was worth from £1 10s to £2 per ton. OLD HAURAIvI. The manager of the Old Hauraki mine, Coromandel, reporting for the week ended September 30, states: — 400 ft Level.—New reef : Advanced 6ft; total. 209 ft. The reef and country continue promising for gold. Stoning: No. 1 block No. 2 stope, advanced 6ft; colours of gold seen. No. 3 stopo, advanced 6ft; total, 68ft; 201b picked stone won.
