The Athens correspondent of the Times reports that the situation with respect to the relations of Greece and Turkey is one of extreme gravity. Peace or war, he says, rests on the irresponsible young Turk committees, which are now practically controlling the army. Chauvinistic officers of the Turkish army favour the occupation of Thessaly as hostage for the settlement of the Cretan question. The Greek Government has hurriedly vacated the three Cretan seats in the Assembly in order to deprive the Turks of any excuse for aggression. WELL-KNOWN JOCKEY'S END
VICTIM OF ALCOHOL. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. London, October 2. T. Loates, the famous jockey, whose death was reported a few days ago, had been suffering for some time from alcoholic dementia, and was found dead in a fit. At the inquest a verdict was returned of death from natural causes. The large fortune left by Loates \Vas due to his having followed the advice of Baron Leopold de Rothschild in making investments.
