PROGRESS OF AVONDALE.
[FROM our OWN correspondent.]
It is pleasing to note the advance Avondale has made in the past two or three years. A great deal of building has been done lately, and evidences are to be seen of a still further forward movement. Where scrub and gorse occupied the land but a year or two ago now may be seen rows of villas. The train service has had a great deal to do with this progression, as trains run very frequently, allowing workmen to be in Auckland to. start work from 7.30 a.m.
A comparison of tickets sold at the different stations for the years ending March, 1909 and 1910, will give a good idea of the immense increase of population in this district during that time. On the whole of the Auckland section, extending as far as Thames, Rotorua, Cambridge, Waiouru, and Te Hana, Avondale in 1909 was fifth on the list after Auckland with a sale of 41,492 tickets. This year it is first after Auckland, the number of tickets sold being 59,582, making the increase in one year 18,090.
