FERRY PASSENGER FINED.
LEAVING A MOVING STEAMER.
A CASE of interest to those who travel by the ferry steamers was heard in the Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. J. S. Dickson and M. Casey, J.P.'s, when proceedings were taken by the harbourmaster (Captain A. Duder), represented by Mr. A. C. Ziman, against Henry Stewart, who was charged with having left a ferry boat while such boat was in motion.
Mr. Ziman explained that the prosecution was brought under a, by-law, recently passed, which prohibited passengers from landing from the ferry steamers while they were in motion. A number of accidents had been caused by persons leaving the vessels before they were alongside the wharves, and it was hoped to prevent the practice by means of this bylaw. Tile prosecution was the first under the new by-law, and a heavy penalty was not asked for.
Defendant did not appear, but after evidence had been given by the constable who saw the defendant getting off the boat, he was convicted and fined Is, with costs 30s. A youth named Stuart Little, similarly charged, was convicted and fined Is, with costs 9s.
