MISSIONARIES ENTERTAINED.
A welcome tea was tendered by the Auckland Ministers' Association at Mr. Walter Buchanan's rooms last evening to Drs. I. C. McLaren (Melbourne), and W. H. Pettit (Otago), and the Rev. G. J. Williams (organising agent of the London Missionary Society). Each of the guests made interesting "after tea" speeches, at the conclusion of which the large gathering of ministers and lay representatives appointed a committee, consisting of Messrs. A. C. Caughey, A. J. Entrican, H. M. Smeeton, and 'S. Barry, to work up an interdenominational committee for the furtherance of the interests of the Missionary Laymen's League. The company then adjourned to the Pitt-street Methodist Church, where the Mayor (Mr. L. J. Bagnall) presided over a Targe assemblage. Drs. Pettit and McLaren spoke on the subject of the Laymen's Missionary League, its formation, its progress and its possibilities." _ The Rev. W. Ready spoke in appreciative terms of the addresses, and on his motion a vote of thanks was carried to the Mayor for presiding. A social gathering was held in the Mount Eden Congregational Hall last evening as a welcome to the Revs. H. P. Schleiicker (New Guinea), and G. J. Williams (organising agent for the London Missionary Society). Mr. Schlencker gave an interesting account of his pioneer work in the centre of New Guinea. To-night a public meeting will be held in the Beres-ford-street Hall, when both delegates will speak.
