Two young men. John Hobsori and Valentine" Muxteth, were drowned while surfbathing at Stradbroke Island (Queensland) on Sunday week. The total receipts collected by the Customs Department at Auckland yesterday amounted -to £2181 ss. Id, the sum of £2006.17s 4d being received as Customs . dues.

Madge Dashwood, a girl of 14, while playing last week at Dimbdola (Victoria) Shire quarry, slipped in and was drowned. Joseph Nagel, a -lad aged 13 years, attempted to rescue her, but was unsuccessful.

A meeting of creditors in the estate of George Augustus Bannerman, formerly a hotelkeeper at Mangonui, was to have been held yesterday, but was adjourned until to-morrow, to meet the convenience of the bankrupt. .

At a meeting of the executive of the Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society, held at Napier last night, the report and balance-sheet submitted showed that the recent competitions had been financially successful, and the results in every way satisfactory. The next competition was fixed for August, 1911, and the following judges appointed :Music, Dr. Bradshaw (Christchurch); elocution, Mr. J. Upwards of 90 sections in the town of Puketurua, near Putaruru/ will be offered for sal© bv auction at the Auckland Lands Office on September 30. On the same day there will also he offered for sale some dozen sections in the village of Harapepe, near Te Rore, and a section of 85 acres near Te Puke (Bay of Plenty). A section of 34 acres of first-class land near Te Kuiti and a section of 237 acres of second-class land in the Mangonui district have been opened for selection on the optional system, and applications in each case ■will be received up till October 24.
